TARDE DE LLUVIA Y BOATINÉ | ALEJANDRA DE LA TORRE

Alejandra de la Torre is a Spanish artist who employs a mixed technique of spray, acrylic, and markers to create distinctive paintings.
The artist’s style is easily recognizable: vibrant colors and a composition characterized by chaotic order, which rather than being annoying entertains and generates enthusiasm in the viewer, who finds itself to seek as many references as possible to objects belonging to collective memory within these artworks.
Observing Alejandra de la Torre’s works is somewhat like being transported into the mind of a teenager living in the 80s, a period embedded in the middle of globalization, constantly subject to the influence of trends exported from other countries.

Tarde de lluvia y boatiné is a breath of nostalgic and carefree air full of representative elements: an Arbre Magique dominates the foreground, occupying a significant portion on the right of the artwork; at the base of this little tree, we see a cute frog covered in ink splatters. A shocking pink dinosaur gazes at the frog, seemingly wanting to play together. Further exploration reveals a die, a tube that could contain glue or toothpaste, a koto bridge (piece of a traditional Japanese musical instrument). The more one observes the drawing, the more elements are discovered and recognized.

Numbers, shapes, and graphic symbols are scattered throughout the artwork and even beyond: a distinctive feature of this artist’s practice involves adding graphic symbols to the wall – extensions of the drawing – after installing the artwork.
Tarde de lluvia y boatiné thus appears as a radiant explosion of memory that cannot be confined only to the canvas but needs to expand beyond.

The artwork is currently on display as part of the exhibition “Nasti de Plasti,” a solo show curated by Sara Zaldívar, hosted at the Espinasse31 gallery in Madrid until January 12, 2024.
