Line #smudge | Kenta Cobayashi
Oscillation and metamorphosis are the track on which Kenta Cobayashi fights every convention on the fixity of photography. The artist appropriates the photographic medium to demonstrate the density and depth of the digital: Cobayashi’s actions, the ‘clicks’, on the surface of the image give body to otherwise immaterial concepts such as time and space. The chromatic alterations of the #smudge series are to be read as temporal stratifications and, above all, as proofs of spatial thickness that make Cobayashi’s photography anything but two-dimensional.
As in an engraving, the graphic interferences are created by a tip, in this case, the mouse, and extend the colour data embedded in the bitmap square – which is the basic unit of an image, until it almost completely loses the chromatic origin of the sign. Each photographic shoot can give life to an infinite number of variations, in a constant reshaping of reality.
Kenta Cobayashi defines his artistic research on the boundary between physical and digital in a “pixel aesthetic” which, through manipulation, rejection and divergence, mimics the digital transmission of data through the network in a process that becomes both act and formal outcome of the production of the artwork.
