3D Animation Showreel (2023-2024) by Harriet Davey is the second video presented within the program Pattern, the sixth edition of Digital Video Wall (DVW), an annual project curated by Gemma Fantacci and structured in thematic chapters, aimed at promoting the dissemination and experimentation of digital art.

Harriet Davey is a 3D Artist and Art Director based in Berlin. Through the exploration of gender non-conforming virtual avatars, Davey restores and reclaims the bodies extorted by a male dominated gaming industry. Obsessed with questioning what it means to be fluid and human in a digital world, their work examines and interrogates the ugly and the beautiful; the maximum and the minimum; the online and the offline.
From the wilds of the Yorkshire moorlands, and now based in Berlin, Davey is an established 3D artist whose work researches the dynamics of avatars, bodies, and the fluidity of identity across both physical and digital domains. Through the personal exploration of their own avatar ‘Whowle’ Davey is able to directly probe their personal self expression and gender identity in a form of digital ‘drag’. Creating worlds and alternate universes for Whowle and the rest of their cast of creatures provides an escape for Davey and their viewers.
Their work utilizes short films, animations, stills, and more recently live performances and game engine installations to draw viewers into a fantastical and ethereal escape. Desolate and barren, yet surprisingly fertile, landscapes that extract from the vistas of the moorlands they grew up in set the range of scenes for a diverse cast of virtual humans and non-humans. Creatures that crawl through these worlds with a knowing look in their eye, and hyper realistic movements, somehow evoke feelings of not just unease, but tranquility too.
Davey has exhibited at Ars Electronica, HEK Basel, The Wrong Biennale, MMMAD Festival, Maison des Arts Georges et Claude Pompidou, Miami Art Basel, Berlin Art Week and the Nxt Museum in Amsterdam. They have worked with Maison Margiela, Nike, Adidas and many others. Their work has been featured in BBC, Arte, Vogue Italia, British Vogue, It’s Nice That, I-D Magazine, L’Officiel and Hunger Magazin.
